Acomprehensivesurveyofcomputervision-basedhumanmotioncapturelitera-
turefromthepasttwodecadesispresented.Thefocusisonageneraloverviewbased
onataxonomyofsystemfunctionalities,brokendownintofourprocesses:initial-
ization,tracking,poseestimation,andrecognition.Eachprocessisdiscussedand
dividedintosubprocessesand/orcategoriesofmethodstoprovideareferencetode-
scribeandcomparethemorethan130publicationscoveredbythesurvey.References
areincludedthroughoutthepapertoexemplifyimportantissuesandtheirrelations
tothevariousmethods.Anumberofgeneralassumptionsusedinthisresearch eld
areidenti edandthecharacteroftheseassumptionsindicatesthattheresearch eld
isstillinanearlystageofdevelopment.Toevaluatethestateoftheart,themajor
applicationareasareidenti edandperformancesareanalyzedinlightofthemeth-
odspresentedinthesurvey.Finally,suggestionsforfutureresearchdirectionsare
