Abstract
Thispaperinvestigatesstagedfinancinginanenvironmentwhereanentrepreneurfacesanimperfectcapitalmarketandaninvestorfacesmoralhazardanduncertainty.Stagedfinancingplaystworolesinthismodel:tocontrolriskandtomitigatemoralhazard.Usingparametricfunctionsandcomparingstagedfinancingwithupfrontfinancing,wediscoverafewinterestingpropertiesofstagedfinancing.Inparticular,weshowthatwhenusedtogetherwithasharingcontract,stagedfinancingactsasaneffectivecomplementarymechanismtocontractingincontrollingagencyproblems.
