Description and operation of Aircraft system static electricity

1. General _______R During flight the aircraft can become charged with static electricity. IfR the discharge of this static electricity is not controlled, it can causeR interference in the communications and navigation systems.RR Static dischargers are installed on the aircraft to decrease theR interference.

__________________ 3. System Description

Static discharger assemblies are installed at the tips of: - the horizontal stabilizers - the vertical stabilizer - the rudder.

They are also installed on the trailing edges of: - the fixed structure of the wing - the fixed structure of the horizontal stabilizer - the winglets - the ailerons - the elevators - the rudder - the flap track movable fairings.

_____________________ 4. Component Description

Each static discharger assembly has a static discharger and a base. Bolts attach the base to the wing tip. All the other bases are riveted to the structure. A screw attaches each static discharger to its base, which permits easy replacement of the discharger.

Two types of base are installed: - a flat base at the trailing edges - an angular base at the tips.

Two types of static discharger are installed: - one with a straight mounting, at the trailing edges - one with a 30-degree angle mounting, at the tips. The two types are not interchangeable.

________________________________ 5. Operation/Control and Indicating

The static dischargers: - usually hold the aircraft structure at a voltage below the corona threshold level - discharge the static electricity charge into the atmosphere (in a controlled manner) through a continuous resistance path.
