A Fox and a Monkey
In the middle of the river, there was a mound. A peach tree grew there. There were many peaches on the tree. A fox and a monkey wanted to eat peaches, but they couldn’t cross the river.
The fox and the monkey decided to build a bridge together to share all the peaches on the tree. It really took them a lot of effort to carry a log there. Finally a bridge was built.
The bridge was so narrow that at a time only one man could cross it. The fox said: “let me first pass it.” With the words, he speedily crossed the river.
After the fox got to the mound, he turned back and pushed the log into the river. He wanted to eat all the peaches himself. When the fox ate the peaches he said: “My stupid monkey, please go back.” The monkey laughed grimly: “You can certainly eat peaches, but you’ll never be able to come back!”
Thinking it over, the fox realized, it was an unwise move. He asked the monkey to help him. The monkey didn’t do as he asked, but stalked off.
