Weathermonitoringanditsforecastinghasbecomevitalpartofday-to-daylifebecauseofitsnumerousapplicationsinagriculture,farming, shery,shippingandmilitaryoperations.MeasuringtheweatherusingconventionalormanuallyoperatedWeatherMonitoringStationsrequiresskilledlaborforoperationanddemandsregularmaintenancewhichinvariablyincreasesthelifecyclecostoftheWeatherMonitoringStation.Toaddresstheseissues,theauthorsofthispaperhaveattemptedtodesignandimplementinexpensiveWirelessPortableWeatherMonitoringStationusingPIC16F887microcontroller.TheimplementedWeatherMonitoringStationisequippedwithsensorstomeasureweathervariablessuchasrelativehumidity,atmosphericpressure,rainfall,solarradiation,windspeed,winddirection,surfaceandambienttemperature.Besidesofthesecapabilities,thedesignedWeatherMonitoringstationalsoincludessomeuniquefeatureslikeModbuscommunicationprotocol,whichprovidesseamlesslycommunicationofrealtimeweathermeasurementstothebasestation(PCnLaptop)overbothwired(RSserial)andwireless(XbeePromodules)interfaces.Further,atthebasestation,thereceiveddataisloggedanduploadedtoanonlinedataservertoenableworldwideubiquitousaccesstotheweathermeasurements.

1.Introduction

AtypicalmodernWeatherMonitoringStationusesmultiplemeteorologicalsensorstomonitorweatherchangesbysensingweathervariablessuchastemperature,relativehumidity,dewpoint,atmosphericpressure,winddirectionandwindspeed.ThesemeteorologicalsensorsmaynotbelimitedtomechanicalbutalsoderivedfromadvancedtechnologiessuchasSolidStateand
