1. The Civil War

The northerners of American supported the abolition of slavery and demanded a law to protect tariffs while the southerners were against it. The conflicts were growing and in order to win the support for the Union at home and abroad, President Lincoln waged a war against slavery. The Civil War resolved two fundamental issues. Slavery was completely abolished and American became a single indivisible nation.

2. Melting Pot and Salad Bowl

America is described as a “melting pot” where various racial and ethic groups were combined into one culture.

America has been called a “salad bowl” in that people of different races and ethnic groups mix harmoniously but at the same time keep their distinct culture and custom.

3 . American Constitution

The U.S. Constitution is the basic law of the land. One characteristic is checks and balances . The other is that powers of the federal government and of the state government are specified in the constitutions and laws, and over laws made by the U.S Congress.

4. Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independent was drafted by Thomas Jefferson. It presented a public defense of the American war of Independence, and most importantly it explained the philosophy behind the war, which is central to the western political tradition.

5. Democratic Party

The Democratic Party has a liberal ideology. The Democrats want the government to play an important to role in the economy and emphasize full employment as a matter of concern. They favor civil rights laws, a strong social security system, less restrictive abortion laws, among others.

6. Standard English

Standard English based on the speech of the upper class, is preferred by the educated and is widely used in media and taught at schools. It has been promoted as a model for correct British English and is codified to the extent that the grammar and vocabulary are much the same everywhere in the world where English is taught and used.
