Assignment 1: solution 1.5 Solution:

The examples of telecommunications networks in our everyday life can be as follows: a. The CNN’s telephone network system.

b. The China Telecom’s telephone and computer network system. c. The China Unicom’s cell phone network system.

1.7 Solution:

The Shannon-Hartley theorem tells us that information-carrying capacity is proportional to channel bandwidth. However, the boundary of channel bandwidth is restricted by the frequency of the signal carrier. Since the frequency of the signal carrier we can find and put into practice is limited, we can only get limited information-carrying capacity. That’s to say, to get the biggest capacity, the only method we can take is to make full use of the limited bandwidth. And I think that’s just what the vice president means.

which can be transmitted over optical fiber.

c. Optical Fiber: to transmit the light signal to the destination.

d. Optical Receiver: to receive the light signal and turn it back into electrical signal.

e. Electrical Receiver: to receive the electrical signal and extract the information and finally

present it in a usable form.
